The Book on the moon
Boys and girls! Did you know that there is a book that man sent from the earth to the moon that we see every night? It was the Bible that America sent to the moon on the spaceship, Apollo 14. The Bible was 4,500 pages long and written in sixteen different languages. Just like the moon is seen all over the world, the Bible is the most sacred book. It is the scripture that the entire world looks toward. It is the oldest book and a great bestseller.
What makes the Bible such a great book? We are going to study the important content of this excellent book now, which will no doubt be beneficial to you.
The Book, it changes people
One day a French merchant went to an isolated island of Africa. There was a cannibal race that was native to the island. When he reached the island, he met a chief who was reading a book under a tree.
He went near and asked, "What are you doing?" Then the chief held up the Bible and showed him silently. The merchant laughed and said, “It seems that you don’t really have anything. What help does it give you?"
Then the chief got up in silence and pointed to a big rusty pot that hung on the tree. And he said him quietly,
“Look at this, do you know what it is? If I didn't have this Bible, by now you would have been in this pot."
The Bible changed the cannibal into a good gentleman. Many bad men became good men after reading the Bible. There are many books in the world, but there is only the Bible. The Word of God that can change the mentality of a cannibal race. In addition to that, the Bible is the oldest book in the world and the most interesting book in the world.
How was such a wonderful Book made?
Who made it? Let's study.
The Bible, God's words.
In ancient days God spoke to man directly. But man could no longer talk directly with God after he disobeyed God and went to his own way.
So God chose special men to deliver His messages. We call them the Prophets.
The Bible says, "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways"(Hebrews 1:1).
When a written form of language didn’t exist, how was the Bible transmitted? It was transmitted by word of mouth; fathers to sons, and sons to their grandsons. After the first the first written form of language was made about 1600 BC, however, God's teachings were collected and put into a book and preserved. So when was the Bible written? The Old Testament, which has 39 chapters, was written from about 1500 to 400 BC, and the New Testament, which has 27 chapters, was written from about from 39 to 98 AD.
There were 40 reporters who wrote the Bible over a period of 1600 years. Their jobs were not identical, but the contents of the Bible are unified as if one man had written it. This is because the Bible was inspired by God.
"First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God"(2 Pet. 1:20, 21).
Why did God write and give us the Bible?
What does the Bible teach us?
It teaches us how to live right.
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God ma be thoroughly equipped for every good work"(2 Timothy 3:16, 17).
The Bible teaches us how we can live a righteous life. There are many great men who followed the Bible's teachings.
It shows the future in advance.
Have you ever climbed a high mountain? You can see often signs along the way. The signs show us the distance that we have walked and the direction that we must go. The maps help us to reach to the top quickly and safely. God, also, is teaching us about the future of the world through the Bible. In Amos 3:7, it says,
"Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets."
God wrote all the important events of the future in the Scripture. All of the prophecies in the history have been accomplished correctly without exception.
It teaches us the way to eternal life.
John 5:39 says, "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,"
So what is eternal life? It means that we obtain salvation and become the people of God.
2 Timothy 3:15 says, "And how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
In reality, the wisdom that leads to salvation is the most beautiful wisdom of all. For salvation is the gift of the eternal life, the hope of human beings.
Therefore, we must study the Bible earnestly and have the wisdom of the correct instruction and eternal life. For only by faith in Jesus, that the Bible teaches us, can we have eternal life.
How can we study the Bible?
By constantly praying
We must turn on the light or go to a bright place in order to read a book in a dark room. It is same when we study the Bible. We must pray to obtain the wisdom of God. Let's pray together.
"Heavenly Father!" I'm going to study the Bible, the Word of God. Open my mind and help me realize your will. So that I can live in accordance with Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen."
If you do this, God helps you realize His will.
Many years ago, a boy, named Aristide, lived in France. He was in the second grade of an elementary school. One day his mother called him.
"Aristide, I want to make you a great man. Promise me one thing. Every morning when you get up, read one chapter of the Bible and at night before going to bed, too...."
“Yes, Mom, I'll do as you told me.”
Then his mother said, “And Aristide, you should do one thing before reading the Bible. Pray this prayer. God! Please open my mind when I read the Bible, and help me practice it.”
After that, Aristide always prayed and then read the Bible as his mother had said. He continued to do it for five years. God watched Aristide.
Can you imagine what happened to this boy? Yes, God made him wise and healthy. This boy was Aristide Briand who served as the prime minister of France for 11 years, and won the Nobel peace prize.
Let's summarize what we studied in this chapter.
1. Who were the reporters of the Bible and who is the real author?
2. When was the Bible written?
3. What is the purpose of the Bible?
4. How should we study the Bible?
Until now, we have studied about these important problems in detail. In the next chapter we're going to study about the beginning of the world we live in. In this next chapter you will see the Love of God who created this beautiful world.
